Every type of building is subject to physical laws that cause an exchange of air through apertures in the building. Every exchange of air, no matter the type, entails a shift in the energy balance and, as a result, an increase in maintenance costs. This can be prevented quite simply by planning the system components with air curtain systems.
Air exchange is a natural process when doors/gates are open. What happens in that process? Heated air masses exit the building in the upper door/gate area and cooler air masses flow unhindered into the lower area of the opening. If the building is cooled, this effect can also be observed, but with a different flow distribution.
Air curtains prevent the exchange of air. With the TTL Synchrostream nozzle system, an air stream generated in strength, speed and direction counters the cross-flow, thus preventing the exchange of air. Energy loss is avoided - costs are saved.
Open doors have always appeared inviting to us. They remove our inhibitions to enter a room. That is why it is perfectly normal for us that a shop’s doors are open during business hours. For the retailer, however, the constant draught in his shop can become an energy and economic issue.
Our air curtain systems start exactly at this point. They function like an invisible door and regulate pressure and temperature differences in open rooms. The ejected air of an air curtain system separates the open space from the environment. The air masses are divided. That minimises external influences and significantly improves the energy balance.
A good exhaust system is an indispensable factor for an air curtain. Together with modern high-pressure fans, it ensures a constant and stable air curtain jet. The TTL Synchrostream long-throw nozzle sets standards here. Designed for precise performance and wide-angle adjustment to local conditions, it ensures an effective operation of the air curtain. Compared to conventional exhaust systems, the air and thus the energy requirement of the air curtain for effective screening can be greatly reduced.
The stress factor NOISE affects us all. Everyday life and our professional world are characterised by high noise levels. This constantly stresses the nerves, disrupts concentration and work performance, impairs general well-being and creates tension instead of relaxation.
Air curtains with low noise levels are especially needed where a relaxed atmosphere is to be achieved - both for customers and employees. They contribute to a better quality of life with low operating noise and can underline the architecture with a variety of designs.
TTL exclusively uses fans with EC technology from the market leader ebm papst in its air curtain systems. That not only guarantees excellent speed controllability and thus infinitely variable air volume control, good access with control signals from building management systems, but especially an effective operation in all load ranges.
It is not always feasible to meet all requirements and wishes with standard devices in fixed widths. Installation options, spatial conditions, adaptations to functional parts, e.g. revolving doors, but also architectural reasons play a decisive role. We take this into account by adapting standard devices to the customer’s dimensional specifications. But completely new creations are also possible. If technically feasible, air curtains can also be completely “repackaged” as a design element in collaboration with architects.
Without a targeted control, or better still regulation, an air curtain cannot work effectively at all operating times. Power adjustment should be possible with great sensitivity - with our EC fans, this is now also possible steplessly with large air outputs. Modern buildings are equipped with GLT or BMS systems. Here the air curtain should be switchable, provide appropriate feedback on its screening behaviour and react. For rooms without superordinate control systems, we offer independent controls that adapt the air curtain to indoor temperatures and a changing outside climate in terms of performance and energy requirements.
Which air curtain is suitable for you always depends on the type of building in which the device is to be installed. The corresponding installation principle is then also decided. Taking stock briefly offers some clarity here. The following building types are defined:
Building type A The room has door surfaces only on one side of the building and no connection to upper floors, which creates an internal thermal condition.
Building type B In the building, there are room connections to the top through an open extension over several floors. There are escalators, lifts or permanently open corridors, escape routes and staircases.
Building type C Unprotected door surfaces are opposite or around the corner and cause draughts.

With the right choice of installation principle STE - AWE - TWINtec you directly influence the screening behaviour of the air curtain system. If selected incorrectly, the air curtain roller can be pushed away or infiltrated by cold air. Relying on the most effective principle here- even if this appears more draining in consumption data initially - is worth it in each case and pays off in the long run due to lower heating operating costs.
The standard installation works by means of an air intake from the direction of the room and air outlet above the door. The formation of an air roll, the rotation direction which acts in the room, creates a large zone of increased air movement in the entrance area.
Preferred application area: In case of pressure equalisation or overpressure. For smaller and medium-sized buildings of type A. Not suitable for permanent workplaces in the door area.
This variant works with air intake above the door and exhaust in the room. This creates an air roll, the rotation direction of which counteracts the incoming cold air. The installation variant requires an adapted heating capacity in comparison to the installation variant STE, as more cold air flows in as a result of the air intake.
Preferred application area: The AWE screening roller installation is particularly suitable for buildings that develop internal thermals or also under negative pressure in the building. This corresponds to building type B. The type of installation increases resistance to gusts of wind and therefore ensures good climatic results even in more complicated locations.
This double air curtain combines the advantages of the STE and AWE installation principles in the TWINtec counter-flow principle.
It functions by means of two fan units, which generate two screening rollers rotating counter to each other at different temperatures. The inner, heated screen roller (AWE) screens with the advantages of the AWE principle, the outer, unheated air roller in the STE principle ensures a stable screening in the outer door area and separates the warm air curtain from the outside air. Energy loss is minimized thereby.
Preferred application area: optimal screening performance under all pressure conditions, suitable for types A, B and C.
